Class of 2020

Kamloops School of the Arts Class of 2020 Valedictorian Sydney Ramage

My school education experience has been very unique. Since kindergarten I have attended the school of the arts. This meant that a lot of the learning was taught through some creative medium. Whether that was a skit, dance, a form of media technology, art, or creative writing.

Each way helped me learn uniquely and I believe it helped me learn the best way my brain contains information.

Ever since grade 10 that’s when all of my memorable moments began to happen and stuck with me.

Grade 10 was the year I first joined the major I would stay in, Media arts. My teacher Mr.Macfarlane was an amazing attribute to my learning and so many great opportunities. With his help I was able to reach out into the community to create advertisements and Public service announcement (PSA) videos. The first year of media arts I had this tremendous opportunity to create 4 PSA’s for the combined forces special enforcement unit. This was in association with the RCMP in ending gang activity. Once these PSA’s were finalized I was able to present my work on the news and to my peers. I even received a certificate for the work I had done.

This was the moment when I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

I wish to create content through films that display a story, a lesson, and time through a lens.

I have been accepted into Capilano university’s Motion picture arts program for the coming fall. Unfortunately with all the uncertainty along the road I won’t be able to attend in person for at least the first semester. But I have strong hope that everything will get better, and will lead me to where I am meant to be.

From university I plan to become a director and cinematographer who is known for the message left in my films.

My fellow grads, take care, continue to fight for what you believe in, continue to take the steps in bettering and advancing yours and others futures. We should see diversity be a norm in our everyday society without any public backlash!

Most importantly, grow an open mind and keep stepping through new doors. That’s where you will get the most out of life, where you will meet new people, careers, and many opportunities.

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
